PASADENA, CA – A high scoring third period broke open a tight game as Occidental came away with a 13-3 victory over Caltech in SCIAC men's water polo contest.
The tandem of Samuel Akiiyama and Kevin Coleman scored the contest's first two goals as Occidental grabbed a 2-0 lead with 3:50 left in the first period. A perfectly lofted shot found the far right post on Chris Bradley's shot attempt with 17 seconds left in the frame to cut the Beavers deficit in half.
Bradley scored 30 seconds into the second period to knot the score at 2-2. The final goal of the stanza was scored by Akiyama with 6:08 left as the Tigers grabbed a 3-2 edge. Both defenses played strong the rest of the way as Occidental took a 3-2 lead at the break.
Occidental scored two straight goals to straight the final half as Akiyama scored consecutive goals. Down 5-2 with 5:02 remaining, Caltech put their final goal on the board when CJ Culpepper found the back of the cage. The Tigers ended the period by scoring three unanswered goals in taking an 8-3 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play.
The Tigers concluded the game by posting a 5-0 scoring edge in the final frame.
Akiyama's nine-goal output paced the Tigers offense.
