REDLANDS, Calif. (Nov. 21, 2014) – The Caltech men's water polo team opened the SCIAC Championships against rival Occidental College in the play-in game at the University of Redlands on Friday morning.
The Beavers fell behind early but battled back to a two-goal deficit just before halftime, only to be outscored 5-1 over the second half in an 11-4 defeat.
Senior Ben Grabowski (Lake Forest Park, Wash. / Inglemoor) racked up 20 saves in a dominant effort that proved crucial to Caltech's chances.
The Tigers took a quick 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the first quarter, but freshman Henry Baer (Acalanes, Calif. / Acalanes) put Caltech on the board with just over two minutes remaining in the period. Occidental mustered a third goal with 39 seconds to go, however, and took a two-goal lead into the first break.
Oxy tacked on two more to make it a four-goal game at 5-1 with 5:32 left to play in the first half. Sophomores Chris Bradley (Half Moon Bay, Calif. / Serra) and Jordan Bonilla (Weston Fla. / Cypress Bay) brought the Beavers back within two on back-to-back strikes, but another Oxy goal just before halftime gave the Tigers a 6-3 lead at the intermission.
Junior Patric Eck (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) struck for the first goal of the third quarter to once again bring Caltech within two, but that was all the offense the Beavers had in them as Oxy put away five more goals to put the match out of reach.
Head Coach Pat Beemer and the Beavers will now face the University of La Verne in an elimination match tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. A live video broadcast is available through the SCIAC for $5 and is accessible via the team's schedule page at GoCaltech.com
