PASADENA, Calif. (June 30, 2015) – The Caltech men's water polo team has released its 2015 schedule, including six home games, with the home opener set for Wednesday, Sept. 30.
The Beavers are set to open the season with the Whittier Open on Sept. 5, where they will face the host tied-No. 20 Poets and California Community College Athletic Association/Pacific Coast Athletic Conference member Grossmont College. The following weekend, Caltech will return to the Citrus College Tournament for the fourth straight year on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12, with opponents yet to be determined. Cerritos College (21-9) welcomes Caltech on Wednesday, Sept. 16 with the Beavers looking to avenge last year's 16-12 defeat in which Caltech rallied from five goals down to pull back within one at 12-11 before bowing out.
Caltech kicks off its home schedule with the first two of four games in as many days. RV Johns Hopkins University arrives in Pasadena on Wednesday, Sept. 30 for a 5:00 p.m. start and Washington & Jefferson University pulls in one day later for another 5 p.m. opening whistle. The Beavers faced the Presidents twice in 2014 but came up short in both games, 17-13 and 14-8.
The Beavers will participate in a third straight Gary Troyer Tournament at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3, with opponents yet to be announced, before heading to LA Trade Technical College for the final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 17.
SCIAC play kicks off with a pair of road games at the University of La Verne (10-18 overall, 4-8 SCIAC) on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and the University of Redlands (9-21, 5-6) on Saturday, Oct. 24. Caltech then hosts fourth-place Cal Lutheran University (10-14, 6-5) and second-place RV Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (13-14, 9-2) in back-to-back matchups on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31 at 11 a.m.
The Beavers head back to Pomona-Pitzer (8-19, 4-7) and champions Whittier College (23-13, 11-0) for their final two road games on Wednesday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 7. Occidental College (8-25, 3-9) crosses the 110 Freeway to Pasadena at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11; Caltech came closest to pulling out their first SCIAC win since 2001 (over the Tigers) in an 11-9 defeat at Oxy last Fall. Caltech finishes out its first leg of conference play hosting Chapman University (17-10, 8-3) on Saturday, Nov. 14.
The SCIAC Championships will be hosted by La Verne at Las Flores Park from Friday, Nov. 20-Sunday, Nov. 22, with the Beavers set to play a minimum of two games as part of the double-elimination tournament.
The 2014 squad posted a seven-win season for the first time since 1987, led by graduated career saves record-holder Ben Grabowski and sophomore Chris Bradley (Half Moon Bay, Calif. / Serra), who set a program record with 131 goals to earn Capital One Academic All-America and ACWPC Honorable Mention All-America honors.
