RANCHO, Calif. (Sept. 1, 2018) – The Caltech men's water polo team opened up the 2018 season with a pair of games at Chaffey College on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore center Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis) led all Beavers with nine goals between the two games.
Game One: Palomar 10, Caltech 9
Csaposs' four goals led for Caltech, with senior driver Eshan Govil (Redwood City, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) also helping to pace the Beavers with three goals. A force in front of the net, Csaposs also drew a team-best seven exclusions. Senior Charles Ross (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) and sophomore Neil Sanderson (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Winchester) also scored for Caltech. Goalkeepers Shaurya Gilani (Chicago, Ill. / Adlai Stevenson) and Bradley Justice (El Cajon, Calif. / Grossmont) split time between the pipes, with each player accounting for nine saves. Two goals away from victory, the Beavers' 12 earned powerplays were a point of encouragement.
Game Two: Chaffey, Caltech 8
Csaposs led the way once again for Caltech, this time by scoring five goals to go with eight drawn exclusions and two assists. For a second time, Govil followed Csaposs with two goals and sophomore Alex Janosi (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) led the team defensively with four steals and a perfect outing on sprints. Freshman Alex Wang (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School) also scored the first goal of his career and Ross added Caltech's ninth goal. The Beavers put forth an even scoring effort in Saturday's second game, scoring the most goals in the second period with three.
Bonafede and the Beavers will hit the road again next weekend for a four-game road trip in Western Pennsylvania beginning with Gannon on Saturday, Sept. 8.
