PASADENA (June 11, 2019) – The Caltech men's water polo team has unveiled its schedule for the upcoming 2019 season, slated to begin in September. The Beavers will be returning Second Team All-SCIAC center Steven Csaposs and the majority of a team that averaged the fourth-best GPA in Division III.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will begin the season with five consecutive regular season road games, beginning with Cal State Fullerton and California Miramar University in the Citrus Tournament on September 7. Caltech will then play back-to-back one-off away games on Tuesday, Sept. 10 and Wednesday, Sept. 11 against Mt. San Antonio College and Chaffey College respectively before concluding the road swing with Riverside City College on Saturday, Sept. 14 at a to-be-announced time.
From that point on, the Beavers will begin their SCIAC schedule where they will look to improve upon their three conference wins over the previous two seasons. The conference schedule will prove tough from the on-set, as the Beavers will open SCIAC play with three of 2018's top four finishers, leading off with defending champion Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Pasadena on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Caltech will then travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges to meet the runner-up Stags on Saturday, Sept. 21, before returning home to face California Lutheran University on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. off their bye week.
Caltech continues the month of October with a Saturday appearance at the Gary Troyer Tournament in Claremont, where they will play a pair of games on Oct. 5. The Beavers are then set to travel to Occidental College on Wednesday, Oct. 9 for the first of two meetings this year. Back in 2017, Caltech picked up three wins over Occidental, and revenge could be on tap after the Beavers came up short to the Tigers in last year's lone challenge. The men's water polo team will then begin a three-game homestand beginning with the University of Redlands on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m., before hosting Washington & Jefferson College on Monday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. The Beavers will continue their three-game week with regularly scheduled Wednesday and Saturday SCIAC matches, first hosting the University of La Verne at 7 p.m. before traveling to Chapman University that weekend to complete the first go-around of SCIAC games. The Beavers took down the Leopards in convincing fashion on Halloween night just one season ago.
The Beavers will travel to Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 26, for an 11 a.m. contest before returning home to host Whittier College the following Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. Following the Whittier game, the men's water polo team will host its annual Alumni Game at 2 p.m. Caltech is then set to finish its season with a pair of contests on the road and back at home, beginning with a trip to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The Beavers will next travel to Redlands on the ensuing Saturday for their final away game of the season. Caltech is scheduled to close out the 2019 season with a home rematch against Occidental College on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. and will host Senior Day during a game with CMS on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m.
