PASADENA, CA – The Caltech swim/dive squads opened the 2013 SCIAC portion of their schedule by hosting Occidental on Saturday morning.
The Tigers won both meets. Occidental posted a 171-51 scoring edge in the women's meet while tallying a 141-74 victory on the men's side. Although they didn't come away with team wins, Caltech had its fair share of bright spots during the morning swims.
During the men's meet the Beavers won both relay events. The Caltech foursome of Jim Blackwood, Tommy Kwong, Cedric Flamant and Patric Eck swam the 200 yard medley relay in 1:50.73 to out touch their competition by just over five seconds.
In the meets final event Jack Blackwood teamed with Flamant, Eck and his brother, Jim, to win the 200 yard freestyle relay. They posted a time of 1:35.66 which topped Occidental by nearly four seconds.
During the 50 yard freestyle event, Caltech's CJ Culpepper posted a second place finish with a time of 23.99 which was just .30 behind Occidental's Will Westwater. Eck and Jim Blackwood also posted runner-up finishes during the meet in the 100 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly respectively. Kwong swan the 100 yard backstroke in 1:07.61 to place second in that event.
Eck scored the most points for the men's squad by contributing 26 points to the Beavers total. Jim Blackwood and Kwong each chipped in 17 points to the Caltech cause.
Jacqueline Masehi-Lano contributed two first place finishes for the Caltech women's squad. The sophomore started her morning by winning the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.14. She followed that with a win in the 100 yard freestyle (56:36) to cap off her 19th birthday.
Hanna Dodd had a solid swim during the 100 yard butterfly event. The senior posted a runner-up finish with a time of 1:19.07.
