CLAREMONT, Calif. (Feb. 16, 2019) – Sophomore diver Krystin Brown (Lake Forest, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) made a pair of finals at the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges-hosted SCIAC Diving Championships this weekend. Classmate Nerys Huffman (Broomfield, Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter School) joined Brown in competing in both Saturday's 1-meter and Sunday's 3-meters events, while senior Alix Espino (El Paso, Texas / El Paso) competed alongside the duo in the 1-meter event.
Brown earned ninth-place finishes in both events, with the top-nine divers securing spots in the finals. Brown's 337.85 in this year's 3-meter preliminaries marked her best score in the event this year and the sophomore's ability to score on the 204C has improved in every meet thus far this year. Brown scored a 337.20 in the finals, though both scores make for a near 71-point improvement over her previous best. Huffman scored a 287 in the 3-meter event for another Caltech season-best total.
Things went similarly for Brown and the Beavers in Saturday's 1-meter event. Brown earned a ninth-place finish in the preliminaries and finals, though this time the sophomore managed to outscore her preliminary total (335.15) in the finals, by 35 points, no less. Brown's 370.15 marked another season best, though came in 23 points behind her score at last year's SCIAC Championships. Similarly to her 204C in the 3-meter competition, Brown showed consistent improvement this year with her 104C, taking it a step further with each time on the board. Huffman rounded out the top-10 on the 1-meter board finishing 13 points behind Brown for a season-best 322, narrowly missing out on a finals appearance of her own. Espino, meanwhile ended her Caltech diving career on a high-note with a season-best off the 1-meter board (171.70).
Head Coach Andy Brabson and the rest of the swimming program are currently in preparation for the SCIAC Championship meet, beginning this Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
