CLAREMONT, Calif. (Feb. 23, 2019) – The Caltech women's track & field team got to show its capabilities, particularly in relay events at Saturday's Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges-hosted Rossi Relays.
The Beavers' distance medley relay team consisted of sophomore Molly Crotteau (Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton) running the 1200, senior Michelle Marasigan (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / James B. Conant) running the 400, senior Melissa Gutierrez (Pico Rivera, Calif. / El Rancho) in the 800 and sophomore Claire Hu (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M. Gunn) in the 1600. The quartet clocked in at 13:06.39, finished sixth among participating Division III teams, topped last year's time and thus claimed a new program-best. The same group of runners also competed in the 4x800 relay and improved on last year's 'A' team time by nearly 30 seconds (10:20.16).
"This meet is a unique one on our schedule that gives our distance runners the opportunity to run relays with their teammates," Head Coach Ben Raphelson said. "It's a nice change of pace before zeroing in on their primary events for the remainder of the season."
In addition to its 'A' relay team, Caltech's throwers were also in action on Saturday, with senior Muskaan Goyal (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview) achieving a huge PR in the hammer throw. Goyal hit 23.41m, a one-and-a-half meter more sprinter Nora Griffith (Santa Cruz, Calif. / Santa Cruz) made her 2019 debuts in the 100m dash and 100 hurdles, events where she will be looking to improve in as the season progresses.
Raphelson and the Beavers will be back in Claremont their first SCIAC Multi-Dual of the season this Saturday, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Occidental College, Whittier College and Chapman University will also be competing.
