PASADENA (Mar. 30, 2019) – The Caltech women's track & field team, led by its senior members had a successful day at the team's first home meet in three years and first on the newly renovated South Field. The Caltech-hosted SCIAC Multi-Dual #2 featured competitors from the host Beavers, Whittier College, California Lutheran University and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Senior Michelle Marasigan ( Elk Grove Village, Ill. / James B. Conant) ran the 1500 for the first time this year and moved the sixth on the all-time list with her 5:00.19 time. The senior improved on her all-time best time by over five seconds and moved up two spots on the all-time list thanks to the fourth-place finish. Classmate Muskaan Goyal (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview) also had a big day in the throwing events, scoring a massive PR in the hammer throw (28.13m) to move to sixth on the all-time list. The senior has particularly shown consistent hammer improvements throughout the season, as her new PR is a near-eight meter improvement on last year's top mark. Goyal also competed in the shot put and discus, along with junior Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon). Lauinger competed in all four throwing events and finished no worse than sixth in any event and picked up a third-place finish in the javelin (29.92). Freshman Antonia Liu (Tenafly, N.J. / Bergen County Academies) joined Lauinger in the discus, hammer and javelin.
"The seniors really carried the day today," Head Coach Ben Raphelson said. "Michelle and Muskaan made the most of the opportunity to compete on their home track for the first time since their freshmen year. I couldn't be happier for them."
Sophomore Molly Crotteau (Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton) added one of the top performances of the day in the women's 3000 steeplechase. Crotteau's second-place 12:09.42 was good for a career-best time and an eight-second improvement on last year's top steeplechase time. The junior remains the fourth-fastest steeplechase runner in program history. Sophomore Claire Hu ( Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M. Gunn) and freshman Natali Lelieur (South Pasadena, Calif. / South Pasadena) joined Marasigan, Caltech's top finisher in the 1500, with Hu crossing the finish line directly behind Marasigan with three seconds between them.
Sophomore Nora Griffith (Santa Cruz, Calif. / Santa Cruz) led Caltech in the speed events, posting a sixth-place 13.39 in the 100 dash and a second-place 1:06.75 in the 400 hurdles. Freshman Moya Ly (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) made her Caltech track & field debut in the 200 dash, posting a 30.69.
Raphelson and the Beavers will kick off the month of April with the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on Saturday, Apr. 6 at 10 a.m.
