LOS ANGELES (May 11, 2019) – Sophomore Claire Hu (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M. Gunn) of the Caltech women's track & field team finished 2019 on a high note, breaking her own school record in the 5000m run for the second time this season at Saturday's Oxy Invite.
Hu was one of three scholar athletes to represent Caltech alongside teammates Simon Ricci (Chicago, Ill. / Latin School of Chicago), Gaurav Phanse (Fremont, Calif. / Dublin) and Peter Kulits (Everett, Wash. / King's) of the men's team. The sophomore, who set the Caltech 5000 record at last year's SCIAC Championships and broke her own mark with a five second improvement at this year's Oxy Distance Carnival put up one more successful outing on the Occidental track Saturday evening. Hu bettered her previous best time by eight seconds and now has the Caltech record down to 17:50.10. Hu is also the only Caltech runner in the history of the women's program to break 18 minutes in the 5000, and now finds herself nearly 40 seconds faster than the next fastest to compete in the distance.
Ricci and Phanse, meanwhile turned in solid runs of their owns with each runner improving upon their 5000m runs at last month's SCIAC Championships in Claremont. Phanse led the way for Caltech with a 15:14.71 (a 14-second improvement on SCIAC's), while Ricci crossed the finish line in 15:21.44 to achieve a three second PR that has him positioned fifth among Caltech's top-10 5000m runners all time. Triple jumper Kulits, meanwhile came within four-tenths of a meter of his SCIAC mark, coming in at 13.27m.
Head Coach Ben Raphelson and the Beavers will conclude the 2019 season having taken yet another step forward, with improved team finishes at the SCIAC Championships for both teams to go along with a trio of new program records for the women's team.
