PASADENA (May 20, 2019) – Sophomore Claire Hu (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M. Gunn) of the Caltech women's track & field team earned All-Region designation from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Sunday, and is the program's first outdoor track & field athlete to earn the honor since the USTFCCCA introduced the all-region awards to outdoor in 2016.
Hu received the honor thanks to her record-setting run in the women's 10000 at this year's SCIAC Championship meet. The sophomore, now the owner of two Caltech distance records, crossed the finish line in 37:38.12, broke the school record by nearly three minutes and became the first Beaver to complete the mammoth distance in under 40 minutes. Top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned the honors, in addition to each of the members of a top-3 ranked relay teams. Hu ended up placing third in the event among SCIAC competitors.
As a conference, the SCIAC led Division III with a combined 143 all-region honors between nine teams.
