PASADENA, Calif. – Linfield broke open a tight contest with a big second half en route to a 92-56 win over Caltech in a non-conference women's basketball match-up at the Braun Athletic Center.
The first 10 minutes of the game were back-and-forth as neither team held a lead larger than three points as the lead changed hands eight times. With Caltech holding an 18-17 lead with 11:55 remaining until halftime, Linfield (2-2) began to slowly nudge ahead as they went on a 19-5 scoring spurt to take a 37-22 advantage with 5:19 left until intermission. Caltech clawed back and got their deficit down to 41-31 at the halftime horn.
After a Krissy Dahl lay-up with 16:57 left in the game brought Caltech (0-3) within 47-39, the Wildcats took control of the contest. In a span of less than nine minutes, Linfield scored 27 of the game's next 35 points as they grabbed all momentum in taking a 74-47 edge with 8:27 remaining. The Wildcats eventually stretched their lead in cruising to win.
Linfield used a strong inside presence to help seal the win. The Wildcats posted a 54-18 advantage in points scored in the paint. They also used a solid defense as they forced Caltech into 29 turnovers while tallying 23 steals. Linfield held a 33-13 edge in points off of turnovers.
The visitors had five different players score in double figures led by Chrissy Baumgartner's 16 points. Stephanie Fenniomore scored 15 points on the strength of a 6-for-7 shooting effort. Micha Pringle came off the bench to score 14 points while grabbing a game high eight steals. Gretchen Owens, the team's leading scorer coming into the game, had 14 points in 23 minutes of action. Brynna Fuller rounded out the double-digit producers with 10 points.
Paige Logan scored a team 19 points in her second collegiate game for Caltech. The freshman also grabbed a game high seven rebounds.
Dahl nailed six of her eight field goal attempts en route to a 12 point evening. Erin Hoops scored 10 points and dished out a team high five assists.
