LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Occidental forced Caltech into 49 turnovers in cruising to an 80-24 win over the Beavers on Thursday evening in a SCIAC women's basketball match-up at Rush Gymnasium.
The Tigers took those miscues and turned them into 52 points.
Occidental, currently tied with the University of Redlands for first place in the SCIAC, never let the Beavers get closer than their 35-16 halftime deficit. In the opening half Caltech knocked down 50 percent (8-of-16) of their shots but turned the ball over 27 times as Occidental (10-7, 5-1) went into the locker room with their 19-point lead.
The home squad held Caltech (0-17, 0-6) to eight points and a 2-for-15 shooting effort in the game's final stanza in coasting to the win. In addition to their stifling defense, The Tigers converted 18 of their 32 attempts (56.3 percent) from the field during that frame.
All 14 players who saw action for Occidental scored. Elizabeth Messick and Stephanie Scamman each scored a game high 10 points.
