WHITTIER, Calif. – Whittier rode a solid second half scoring effort to a 71-31 victory over Caltech on Saturday evening in a SCIAC women's basketball matchup at Dave Jacobs Court.
In the opening half Whittier (10-8, 4-3) jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Caltech (0-18, 0-7) scored on back-to-back possessions with buckets by Krissy Dahl and Paige Logan as the visitors drew within 11-6 with 13:44 left in the frame. However, the Poets proceeded to score 16 of the game's next 20 points in giving them a 27-10 advantage with 6:15 left until halftime. Whittier carried a 31-16 lead into the locker room.
During the first stanza, Caltech held Whittier to an 8-for-32 effort from the floor. The Beavers blocked six shots in the first 20 minutes. However, 11 team fouls send the Poets to the foul line 17 times where they converted 14 of those attempts.
Whittier squashed any hopes of a Caltech comeback in the second half. The Poets opened the half on a 17-1 scoring spurt. An Erin Hoops three-pointer with 10:45 left in the game was the first field goal the Beavers hit in the final half.
The Poets held Caltech without a field goal for the final 5:57 of the contest. Whittier nailed half of their 12 attempts from behind the arc to aid in their second half scoring efforts.
Paige Logan was the only Beaver to score in double figures with a 10-point evening. The freshman also grabbed eight rebounds. Dahl secured a team best 11 rebounds while posting a season high four blocked shots.
