PASADENA, Calif. – Alexis Sones scored a game high 27 points to lead Pomona-Pitzer to a 68-42 win over Caltech in a SCIAC women's basketball match-up on Thursday evening.
The Beavers started well as they scored on their first two possessions in taking a quick 4-0 lead. The Saghehens rode the hot shooting of Sones the rest of the half. The junior went 6-for-11 from behind the arc in helping the Pomona-Pitzer to a 36-18 lead after 20 minutes.
Sones' 20-point first half came in 17 minutes of action. She hit seven of her 15 field goal attempts while the rest of squad went 7-for-19 from the floor in building their lead at intermission. During the first 20 minutes the Sagehens down low game played a vital role as eight of their 22 rebounds came on the offensive end in helping them hold a 13-0 advantage in second chance points.
A determined Caltech squad came out of the locker room by scoring eight of the first 11 points in the second half as they cut their deficit to 36-24. However, Pomona-Pitzer never let the home squad closer than 12-point margin in taking the win.
The visitors held a plus-10 rebounding margin which helped them post an 18-4 edge in second chance points. The post players from Pomona-Pitzer tallied a 22-14 advantage in paint points.
In addition to Sones game high scoring output, Maria Weyhrauch tallied 11 points in 31 minutes for the Sagehens. Asha Gipson took game high rebounding honors by grabbing nine.
Caltech's final home of the season is Saturday at 5:00 p.m. against Cal Lutheran. The Beavers three seniors (Juarez, Shannon Mohler and Krissy Dahl) are participating in their final game at the Braun Athletic Center.
