REDLANDS, CA – The University of Redlands women's basketball squad grabbed momentum late in first half and continued it after halftime en route to a 78-47 win over Caltech.
Stephanie Wong had a stellar game for the Beavers. She scored a game high 17 points as all but one of her six made field goals came from behind the arc. It was the fourth game this season the first-year connected on at least five three-pointers. Her season total of 338 points is 27 away from the school's single season record.
A pesky Caltech squad made the going rough for the Bulldogs during a majority of the first half. The home squad rushed out to a 20-9 lead early but the Beavers responded with back-to-back field goal brought Caltech back within single digits quickly at 20-14. An Esther Du jumper with 6:23 left until halftime continued to give Caltech life as the Beavers found themselves down just 24-20. Unfortunately for Caltech they couldn't pull any closer.
The final 100 seconds of the stanza swung momentum. Caltech's Ann Chen scored down low then Stephanie Wong hit a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions as the Beavers trimmed their deficit to 34-28. The home team went into the locker room with all the momentum as they hit consecutive shots from behind the arc on their final two possessions. Redlands took a 40-28 edge into the locker room.
Redlands continued with that momentum to start the second half as they opened the frame on a 12-2 scoring spurt in taking a 52-30 lead. The Beaver continued to battle but couldn't get their deficit underneath 10 points.
In addition to Wong's efforts, Caltech got a solid game from Bridget Connor. The sophomore nailed four of her five field goal attempts en route to a season high nine-point performance.
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Ashley Sevilla's 14 points.
The Beavers take the next week off before playing their final home game of the season. On Thursday, Feb. 14 Caltech will celebrate senior day against Chapman at 7:30 p.m.
