PASADENA, Calif. (Nov. 28, 2015) – Senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) drilled another five three-pointers in the Caltech women's basketball team's defeat to UC Merced in the final game of the Caltech-Occidental Fall Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Wong was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. She has already totaled 16 made three-pointers on 59 percent shooting over her first three games, putting her atop the conference by a wide margin.
UC Merced forced 36 turnovers that led to an additional 23 shots and outshot the Beavers 47-31 percent to improve to 1-7 overall while the Beavers dip to 1-2.
Stephanie and junior Michelle Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) opened the scoring with back-to-back three-pointers as the teams traded baskets over the first three minutes. After an 8-1 run put UC Merced up by four, Stephanie hit another trey to make it a one-point game midway through the quarter but the visitors rattled off nine unanswered points and built up a 13-point lead at the end of the period.
The Beavers outscored the Golden Bobcats over the second quarter, 20-19, thanks to an 11-point barrage by Wong that included another trio of threes. Caltech cut the deficit to eight before halftime, but that was as close as the hosts would get as UC Merced steadily outpaced the Beavers with a 44-16 edge in the second half.
Wong just missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds, nearing triple-double territory with seven steals. Junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) and freshman Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) chipped in 12 and 10 points, with Lewis adding seven rebounds and two blocks, while Michelle Wong dished out four assists.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will take a two-week break from competition before hosting UC Santa Cruz (3-3) on Tuesday. Dec. 15 at 6 p.m.
