PASADENA, Calif. (Dec. 15, 2015) – Junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) notched her second double-double of the young season as the Caltech women's basketball team returned to action after a two-week break to host UC Santa Cruz on Tuesday night.
The Beavers hung around for a quarter but the Banana Slugs blew the game open with an 18-4 edge in the second en route to a 65-30 victory. The shots were not falling for the hosts as Caltech hit just 18 percent from the field and did not make a single three-pointer while committing 24 turnovers. UCSC improves to 6-3 while Caltech dips to 1-3.
Caltech shot out to a 6-0 lead over the first three-and-a-half minutes as UCSC missed its first five shots and committed three turnovers. Once the Banana Slugs settled down, they ran off seven straight points to take the lead with 3:46 on the clock. Lewis converted a three-point play to regain the edge, but UCSC snatched it back with a 5-1 run over the final 1:19 of the quarter to lead 12-10 at the first break.
UCSC's Kim Tom opened the second quarter with a pair of dagger three-pointers and the Banana Slugs held the Beavers scoreless over the first eight minutes while building up a 15-point edge. UCSC went on to lead by 16 at halftime and steadily extended the margin to a game-high of 37 before the final whistle.
Lewis scored in double figures for the fourth time in as many games this season, netting 11 to go with 13 rebounds (seven on the offensive glass) and five steals. Freshman Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) pulled down 10 boards while freshman Madeline Schemel (Westport, Conn. / Staples) blocked two shots.
