PASADENA, Calif. (Dec. 18, 2015) – Junior Michelle Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) and senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) each netted 11 points to pace the Caltech women's basketball team in a 69-36 defeat to Willamette University on Friday night.
The Bearcats rode a 17-6 advantage in the second quarter to improve to 6-2 on the season while the Beavers dip to 1-4.
Stephanie Wong opened the scoring but a layup and pair of three-pointers sent Willamette in front, 8-2, three minutes into play. Wong brought Caltech back within three at 11-8 with consecutive jumpers and Michelle hit the first of two free throws to pull within two, but the Bearcats scored on their final possession of the quarter to lead 13-9 at the first break.
Caltech kept it close over the first four minutes of the second quarter, but did not score again after the 5:57 mark while Willamette surged to a 15-point halftime lead. Michelle scored a quick five points early in the third quarter and Stephanie chipped in another five midway through, but Willamette maintained control and steadily increased the margin over the final 12 minutes to a high of 35 before the final whistle.
The Wong sisters shot a combined 8-for-15 from the field and 3-for-9 beyond the arc, with Michelle adding two assists and Stephanie grabbing four rebounds and blocking three shots. Junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronal Reagan) added eight points, nine rebounds and three assists and freshman Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) tallied a game-high four blocks.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers host La Sierra University (2-8) on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. in the final home game of 2015, with the Beavers heading out to Minnesota for a two-game set before the New Year.
