RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Jan. 2, 2016) – Junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) just missed a fifth double-double and senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) scored in double figures for the eighth time in nine games as Caltech women's basketball fell at La Sierra University, 66-41, on Saturday evening.
The Beavers were outrebounded by 10 and committed 13 more turnovers to drop to 2-7 on the season, while La Sierra improves to 4-9.
The Golden Eagles scored the game's first seven points over 2:25 and built the lead up to 12 at 16-4 by the end of the first quarter. Caltech cut the deficit back to single digits midway through the second but the hosts steadily extended the margin throughout the rest of the game, leading by a high of 28 early in the fourth quarter before the final difference of 25.
Lewis grabbed 12 rebounds for the fifth time this season and added nine points, four assists, two steals and a block while Wong scored 11, grabbed seven boards, made four steals and dished out two assists. Freshman Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) scored in double figures for the third straight game with 11 on 5-for-9 shooting to go with five rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers will open SCIAC play on Tuesday, Jan. 5 as they head to conference-leading RV Cal Lutheran University (8-3, 2-0) for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
