THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Jan. 5, 2016) – Junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) continued her recent hot streak despite a Caltech women's basketball defeat in the SCIAC opener at conference-leading and Cal Lutheran University on Tuesday night.
The Regals, which received votes in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, rode dominant second and third quarters to record the 90-43 victory, improving to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC while the Beavers dip to 2-8 and begin SCIAC play at 0-1.
The 6-1 forward scored a team-high 18 points, going 8-for-20 from the field, and rounded out another strong line with seven rebounds (five offensive), four assists and four steals.
Lewis and freshman Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) scored all 14 points for the Beavers in the first quarter, with Lewis keeping it close at 5-4 early and hitting a layup on the final possession to trail by 11 at the first break. The Beavers would go the first four minutes of the second quarter without a basket to allow CLU to build up a 23-point lead and Caltech was fortunate to get five back in the final 1:30 on a Lewis layup and three-pointer by junior Michelle Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) to go into halftime down 46-21. CLU scored another 25 unanswered points as Caltech went scoreless over the first eight minutes of the third quarter before the Beavers salvaged some pride with an even 17-17 fourth quarter in which Wong netted five points and three others added four.
Wong scored in double figures for the fourth game this season, netting 11 on 4-for-7 shooting and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc while Haleftiras finished with eight points on 4-for-9 shooting.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers welcome the University of Redlands (4-6, 1-0) on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
