REDLANDS, Calif. (Feb. 11, 2016) – Junior Michelle Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) continued to fill up the box score with six points, four rebounds, five steals and three assists as Caltech women's basketball dropped a SCIAC matchup at the University of Redlands on Thursday night.
The hosts took an early 8-4 lead but Caltech flipped the script with a seven unanswered points to move ahead by three at 11-8 with 3:14 left in the first quarter. The foes then combined for 13 points in the final two minutes as the Beavers held a 17-15 lead heading into the second quarter.
Redlands took control at that point, holding the Beavers to just a pair of free throws until only 22 seconds remained in the half to surge ahead by 12 at the intermission. That margin became 22 at the midway point of the third quarter, at which point the Caltech defense locked in to hold the Bulldogs scoreless through the next break, although the Beavers would net just two points themselves to trail by 20 with 10 minutes remaining. Redlands stretched the lead to a high of 28 with just under two minutes left to play before Caltech pulled a few back for the final margin of 24 at 63-39.
Junior Kate Lewis (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) led the Beavers with 13 points and six rebounds while senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) hit a pair of three-pointers and freshman Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) added eight points on 4-for-7 shooting coming off the bench.
Head Coach Sandra Marbut and the Beavers face Whittier College (6-15, 3-9) in their penultimate road game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m.
