PASADENA (Feb. 10, 2018) – Junior guard Nika Haleftiras (San Diego, Calif. / Our Lady of Peace) carried the load for the Caltech women's basketball team offensively against visiting University of Redlands on Saturday evening.
The junior led the way with 16 points on 8-of-15 shooting, the highest field goal percentage of any Beaver. She also played the entire game to solidify her status among the Beavers' most active players this season. The team's minutes leader, sophomore guard Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California joined Haleftiras in double-figures with 10 points. Junior center Elizabeth Eiden (White Plains, N.Y. / Holy Child) factored in defensively with four blocks to boost her season average in what was largely a defensive affair.
The Beavers trailed the Bulldogs by just seven points at halftime but did far and away their most damage in the fourth quarter where both offenses started to open things up. Haleftiras scored half of her points in this period while Peng knocked down her team's lone three-pointer. Sophomore forward Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) contributed big in the first half with seven of her eight rebounds coming in the game's first 20 minutes. Caltech did manage to take care of the ball, however, commiting just nine turnovers to match Redlands in that department.
Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will be back at home on Valentine's Day when they host California Lutheran University at 7 p.m.
