PASADENA (Nov. 23, 2019) – Senior guard Grace Peng (San Ramon, Calif. / California) of the Caltech women's basketball team bounced back against the University of California, Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon by stuffing the stat sheet in several statistical categories.
The senior guard scored 18 points on 17 shots, had a trio of assists and played an important role in the Beavers closing the gap towards the end of the first half. Half of Peng's points came in the second quarter when the Beavers outscored the Slugs, 21-16. Over that stretch, Caltech took just 12 shots, but outshot the Banana Slugs and took 10 free throws. Peng, meanwhile scored all nine of her points in the quarter from beyond the arc while setting the table for freshman forward Sahana Saikumar (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia), who matched the senior's second-quarter total.
Four different Beavers registered six rebounds or greater, including both Peng (eight rebounds), Saikumar (seven rebounds), along with senior Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) and freshman Helen Siavelis (Spokane, Wash. / Gonzaga Preparatory School) who each came up with six. Saikumar flashed some upside as a low-post defender, blocking three UC Santa Cruz shots.
Head Coach Bridgette Reyes and the Beavers will host Willamette University on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. before taking part in the Caltech-Oxy Thanksgiving Classic following the holiday.
