PASADENA, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2014) – The Caltech fencing teams enjoyed an outstanding Mini Mega Meet as the women recorded a perfect 6-0 record while the men pulled out an impressive 4-2 mark defending their home gym on Sunday afternoon.
Women's foil and épeé led the way with undefeated records as the women swept two opponents, 24-0, while the men also swept one opponent, 27-0, and won all three weapons against another while scoring in double digits in all but one round.
The Beavers started the day with a tough matchup against UC-Santa Barbara. Men's foil earned two points and épeé nearly took five, but a pair of late 5-4 losses forced the Beavers to settle for three. Women's épeé led the way on the other side, taking the first three bouts and picking up another three straight en route to a decisive 7-2 win. Foil nearly matched that pace, winning 6-3 and leaving the women within just one point of victory, which senior Shi En Kim (Malaysia, Anderson JC) got early in the sabre to clinch the 14-13 decision.
Men's épeé kicked things off against UCLA in Round 2 with a 5-4 edge and foil topped the two-man Bruins squad, 7-2. Needing just two points in the sabre to close out the win, sophomore Marco Cruz-Heredia (Fullerton, Calif. / Washington-Lee) won the opening bout and sophomoreColin Murphy (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Acad.) just beat out his opponent, 5-4, in the seventh bout to seal the 14-13 victory. The women's team had a slightly easier task in picking up the victory, winning both foil and épeé by scores of 6-3 and taking four bouts in the sabre despite fielding just two competitors to record the 16-11 win.
With USC failing to field an épeé team, the women's squad cruised to the 18-8 victory in Round 3 as foil won 6-3 and sabre took three bouts. Men's épeé took the first six bouts in a 7-2 win, but sophomore Matthew Jin (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) picked up the only point for foil and sabre came away with just two to fall, 17-10.
After a short break, both squads eased their way to wins over Pasadena City College, with the women recording a 24-0 sweep and the men sweeping all three weapons in a 17-10 final, paced by foil's 7-2 score.
Heading into Round 5, the Beavers faced their stiffest test of the day in Arizona State University. Both foil squads stepped up to record an 8-1 win on the men's side and a 7-2 victory on the women's. A 6-3 win in the épeé, capped by a clutch 5-2 win by Ethan Lo in the final bout, once again set up women's sabre for the clinching point, and the Beavers did not disappoint, taking four bouts to record the 17-10 victory. As for the men, épeé came away with four bouts to come within just two of a statement victory, and Cruz-Heredia and Murphy got exactly what Caltech needed in sabre to pull out the 14-13 win.
Both sides were awarded default victories over UC-Riverside to end the meet. Senior Katie Fisher (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) was a perfect 15-15 in foil on the day while junior Emilia Hernandez (Fairfield, Conn. / Hopkins School), Kim and all three épeé fencers also recorded double-digit win totals. Lo paced the men's team with a 10-4 record in épeé.
Head Coach Carla Corbit and the Beavers will head to San Diego for the USFA Tournament on the weekend of Nov. 15-16.
