PASADENA (Sept. 28, 2019) – The Caltech women's soccer team put together some moments of inspired play against visiting Occidental College in Saturday's SCIAC clash.
Led by junior center back Nayla Abney (Sewell, N.J. / Deptford Township), the Caltech defense held the Tigers off the scoreboard for the game's first 18 minutes before an unlucky handball in the box set up Occidental's first penalty kick goal of the day. Once the second half began, the Beavers opened with a similar level of energy before giving way to Oxy's superior numbers and experience.
The Beavers managed to generate two solid chances, with the first coming on a header from freshman center back Catherine Kauber (Pleasantville, N.Y. / Pleasantville) that went just over the crossbar. Later in the second half, sophomore Zoe Beaty (Columbus, Ohio / The Wellington School) released a looping shot from deep, forcing the opposing goalkeeper to make a late reaction to properly corral the ball. On the other side, freshman goalkeeper Valerie Hetherington (Bozeman, Mon. / Deerfield Academy) made six saves for the home team over the full 90 minutes.
Head Coach Ellery Gould and the Beavers will next hit the road to face off with the University of La Verne, a team that is also looking for its first SCIAC win of 2019 (0-3-1).
