PASADENA (Oct. 5, 2019) – The Caltech women's soccer team had arguably its best SCIAC showing of the season when it hosted the University of Redlands on Saturday afternoon.
Caltech successfully held Redlands off the board for the first half of play, and in doing so created some prime attacking opportunities. The Beavers had the Bulldogs dead to rights after sophomore Schuyler Dick (Hudson, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) entered the game in the attacking end and set up junior Krystin Brown (Lake Forest, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) just outside the box with less than three minutes to go in the first 45. Brown's ball curled into the net, but not before the midfielder was ruled just offsides, negating the goal. Although the Beavers trailed the Bulldogs in general offensive statistics, they managed to hold their own in time of possession.
The Bulldogs made adjustments in the second half and picked up the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute and an insurance goal in the 59th minute on a pair of tough plays. Freshman goalkeeper Valerie Hetherington (Bozeman, Mon. / Deerfield Academy) made 11 big saves to keep the home team within striking distance throughout the 90-minute game, and with a steady back line in front of her held Redlands scoreless for the game's final 31 minutes.
Head Coach Ellery Gould and the Beavers will next hit the road for a winnable game at Whittier College (1-4-5) on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
