COMMERCE, Calif. (Dec. 14, 2014) – The Caltech women's swimming and diving team competed at the three-day Collegiate Winter Invitational in Commerce, Calif. this past weekend.
Junior Alexandra Ilic (Austin, Texas / Westlake) opened the weekend dropping nearly two seconds to take 12th place in the 1650 Free on Friday night, beating out a fellow junior from the University of La Verne while holding every 50 below 40.00 seconds.
Ilic followed that up the next morning with a finals-qualifying performance in the 200 Free and placed 30th in the evening session. She and junior Grace Lee (Artesia, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) then finished 23rd and 25th in the 100 Back, and the 400 Free Relay team placed 16th to cap Day Two.
Senior Shalini Majumdar (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte), sophomore Kate Evans (Suwanee, Ga. / Lambert), Lee and freshman Katherine Guo (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) all competed in the 100 Free during the Sunday prelim session to close out the meet.
The Beavers finished in eighth place among the nine competing teams, narrowly edging out Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College, 133 to 111.
"I was really impressed with how we responded at this meet, especially coming off a tiring week of finals," Head Coach Jack Leavitt said. "We raced hard and worked on things we've been doing in practice."
Leavitt and the Beavers will enjoy a month-long respite over the Winter Recess before returning to the pool for a tri-meet with La Verne at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday, Jan. 10.
