Majumdar, Kaczmarek, Brown Shine for Women's Swim/Dive at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. (Jan. 31, 2015) – Senior Shalini Majumdar (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte) dropped time in both her repeat events and both sophomore Zofii Kaczmarek (New York, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) and freshman Robin Brown took big steps forward on the diving boards as the Caltech women's swimming and diving team fell to Chapman University, 246-30, in the final away meet of the season on Saturday morning.

Kaczmarek opened the meet with a clutch third-place finish on the 3-meter board, improving by nearly the full 5.5 margin with a score of 158.30 behind a particularly impressive inward one-and-a-half somersault tuck that scored a 30.4.

"Diving did a great job again, they just keep improving every week and that is going to be a big source of points for us at SCIACs," Head Coach Jack Leavitt said.

"The divers upped their degree of difficulty on many dives today and overall saw the improvement we wanted," Diving Coach Ute Zimmerman said.  "That third place was especially good for Zofii."

Majumdar would drop a full five seconds in her 100 Breast, coming in at a 1:24.25, and shaved another half second off her 50 Free time, finishing in 31.09.  Junior Grace Lee (Artesia, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) also trimmed three full seconds off her 100 Free time, clocking a 1:11.16.

Kaczmarek then finished in fourth place at 161.20, narrowly missing third by just 5.6 points yet improving by nine on last week's performance with a much more consistent effort, as all six dives earned scores between 25.5 and 28.8.  Brown excelled for the second consecutive week, bumping up her total score by another 15 to a 145.15 with all six dives earning scores of at least 20 points for the first time this season, including an incredible inward pike dive that earned 29.25 points.

"We were even more shorthanded than normal today but we focused on what we needed to do to improve in our races and accomplished that," Leavitt said.  "We had a few season bests, some by a lot, and with one meet to go I think we're set up to have a pretty great SCIACs."

Leavitt and the Beavers will host California Lutheran University in their final meet of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10:30 a.m.
