PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 24, 2015) – Freshman Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.) won her third straight and team-leading sixth singles match of the season as the Caltech women's tennis squad hosted Northeast regionally ranked No. 19 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesdayafternoon.
The Beavers hung close through the first few games at doubles before the Engineers took control, eventually sweeping doubles en route to an 8-1 victory. RPI improves to 5-4 while Caltech dips to 4-6.
RPI won each doubles match by at least two breaks and soon locked up the win with quick victories at both ends of the singles lineup, dropping just two games apiece at #1 and #6.
Yao overcame a slow start that resulted in a 6-1 first-set defeat, rallying to take the second, 6-2, and the ensuing superbreaker, 10-5. Five of her victories this season have come at the #4 spot, where she has dropped just one match, in the SCIAC opener at No. 38 Whittier College. The Beavers put up a fight at the remaining three courts as well, winning between seven and nine games in the #2, #3 and #5 positions.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will host Willamette University (1-9) on Wednesday, Mar. 25 at 2:00 p.m.
