PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 11, 2015) – Freshman Rachel Morton (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) put up a fight in both doubles and singles as the Caltech women's tennis team took on No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday afternoon.
The Athenas swept the Beavers, 9-0, to improve to 17-1 overall and 6-0 in the SCIAC while Caltech drops to 6-9 (1-6).
Morton and freshman Sarah Antilla (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Union) gave the CMS #3 doubles team all it could handle in a hard-fought 8-4 defeat, while freshmen Grace Yao (La Palma, Calif. / Oxford Acad.) and Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) took a pair of games against the West region's top-ranked pairing in Katie Kuosman and Caroline Ward. The Athenas would take all three courts to lead 3-0 heading into singles play.
Morton led the Beavers in singles play as well, taking two games in each set as she went down, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and sophomore Katie Antilla (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Redondo Union) also came away with three games at the top spot and one game at the bottom, respectively.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will host Cal Lutheran University in their final home match of the season on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 10:00 a.m.
