OJAI, Calif. (Apr. 23, 2015) – Sophomore Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) emerged victorious from a marathon three-set match to advance to the second round of the Ojai Tennis Tournament 115th Edition on Thursday.
Chen rallied after dropping the first set, 5-7, to take control with a 6-3 win in the second and claim the 3 ½-hour match with a 7-6 (2) tiebreak victory in the third set over Westmont College's Alyson Meyer.
The sophomore had little time to celebrate her accomplishment, however, as her next match was schedule to start in less than an hour. Rather than succumb to fatigue and retire with an eye toward doubles later in the day, Chen fought her way through both sets, narrowly missing out on taking a game against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges' Emily Kuo.
Freshman Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) also competed in the singles draw later in the morning, falling 6-1, 6-0 to Chapman University's #1 Sophia Duong, the West region's No. 24-ranked player. The pair then turned right around to play doubles, where they faced Westmont's Meyer and Fernanda Rivera, going down 6-1, 6-1.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will host Occidental College (1-14, 0-8) in the SCIAC Championships Play-in game on Tuesday, Apr. 28 at 5:00 p.m.
