PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 2, 2016) – Freshman Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) claimed the Caltech women's tennis team's lone win against No. 35 Linfield College on Tuesday afternoon.
The rookie posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory at #3 singles in her first career match after a hard-fought 9-7 defeat in #2 doubles alongside sophomore Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood).
Linfield took a quick 2-0 lead in doubles plays with an 8-2 win at court #1 and 8-4 edge at #3, but Chen and Moriyama hung in as long as possible before narrowly falling as the Wildcats completed the sweep. The visitors pulled within one victory of clinching the match as the No. 22-ranked player in the nation, Ella Riddle, topped Chen at #1 singles, although the sophomore did well to take a game in the second set. Moriyama, meanwhile, took the lead in her match before the Wildcats clinched the match with victories at #6, #5 and #4 singles in succession. Junior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) battled hard against the No. 23-ranked player in the West region, Elsa Harris, before falling 6-2, 6-4 and Moriyama capped the day with her win.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to the courts at Biola University on Friday, Feb. 5.
