Women's Tennis Rally in Singles Falls Short on Injury Retirement at Biola

PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2016) – Freshman Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) won her collegiate match debut at #4 singles but the Caltech women's tennis team's rally fell short in a narrow 5-4 defeat at Biola University on Friday.

Box Score

The Beavers quickly fell behind at all three doubles courts, but the #2 and #3 pairings stormed back before falling 8-5 and 8-6, respectively, as Biola recorded the sweep.  The Eagles would need every one of those doubles points as Caltech staged a major rally in singles play, taking the first set on five courts and going on to win four.

Reisler did not drop a single game at #4 and sophomore Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) posted her first career win at the top court, 6-1, 6-1.  Sophomore Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) and freshman Cecelia Andrews (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte) recorded the Beavers' other victories at #5 (6-4, 6-4) and #6 (6-4, 6-2).  Freshman Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) was well on her way to what would have been the difference-making victory at #3 with a 6-1 edge in the first set, but suffered a minor injury and was forced to retire, handing the match to Biola.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers open SCIAC play at Cal Lutheran University (1-1, 0-1) on Friday, Feb. 12.
