CLAREMONT, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2016) – Freshman Cecelia Andrews (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte) won a superbreaker at #6 singles as Caltech women's tennis fell, 8-1, at No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday morning.
The Athenas improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC while the Beavers are now 1-4 (1-2).
Andrews took the first set and came back from an early break before dropping the second by identical 6-4 scores. The rookie then dug deep to come out on top, 10-7, in the superbreaker for the Beavers' lone match victory.
CMS made short work of doubles, but Caltech put up a fight at several singles courts. Freshmen Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) and Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) each won two games in both sets at #2 and #4 while sophomore Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) came back from a 6-0 first set defeat at #5 to take four games in the second before ultimately ceding the match.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will enjoy a three-week break before a busy Spring recess week in which they play seven matches over nine days, beginning with Principia College (0-1) at home on Friday, Mar. 18 at 2 p.m.
