TYLER, Texas (Mar. 26, 2016) – Freshman Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) picked up her second win against a nationally ranked team as Caltech women's tennis concluded its three-match Texas trip with an 8-1 defeat at No. 36 UT-Tyler on Saturday morning.
The Patriots cruised through doubles dropping just seven combined games across the three courts, but the Beavers put up much more of a fight in singles. Although UT-Tyler quickly clinched the match and led 6-0 after wins at #1, #5 and #6, Junior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) came up just short in her first set at #4 before going down, 6-4, 6-1, while freshman Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) nearly forced a third set but was beaten, 6-3, 7-5, at #2. Moriyama, meanwhile, took the first set 6-4 and claimed the victory with a 7-5 edge in the second for the Beavers' lone point.
