PASADENA (Feb. 20, 2017) – Sophomore Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) scored a decisive victory at #2 singles but the Beavers lost to No. 28 Brandeis University, 6-1, in a match that was played to decision due to impending weather conditions.
Moriyama earned a decisive, 6-4, 6-0 victory to continue her perfect singles record so far this season. Had the rainy conditions not factored into the match being shortened, Moriyama might not have been the only Beaver to pull out a victory. Freshman Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) won her first set at #4 singles and was on serve at 3-4 in the second before play was stopped when the Judges earned their fifth point. Senior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar), meanwhile, came a few points away from earning another victory for Caltech as she was allowed to play out a superbreaker at #5 after rallying from a 3-6 defeat in the first set to dominate the second, 6-1, before ultimately falling 10-6.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to the court Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. to face off with visiting Bates College as they look to move their record back above .500.
