Women's Tennis Sends Six to ITA Regionals

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2018) – Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and sophomore Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) have earned top billing as the #7-seeded doubles pair among the Caltech women's tennis team slated to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regional Championship beginning Friday.

ITA West Regional Draws

Six Beavers will contend against all the West region has to offer in the newly flighted tournament with one doubles pairing, four 'A' flight berths and two 'B' flight spots.

The 14th-ranked duo in the final West region rankings last season, Moriyama and Liu will face a stiff test to better last season's quarterfinals appearance in the tournament; should they win their first-round matchup against the University of Redlands's likely third doubles pairing, the Beavers will face the #2 seed in Pomona Pitzer Colleges' Arianna Chen and Caroline Casper.

A trio of Beavers are favored in their first round match, with Liu leading the way as the #10 seed in a matchup against Karen Kobayashi, the regular #5 singles player for Redlands last year. Moriyama draws Pomona-Pitzer's Jay Kim, who picked up a first-round win in last year's competition but played only one singles match last spring at the #6 position.

Rookies Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) have also made the 'A' flight, with Tifrea favored against Sagehens Top-200 recruit Margherita Andreassi and Hyun the underdog against #9 Elizabeth Johnson, who was the mainstay at #2 singles (7-9) for Redlands last season. Three Athenas from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, all seeded among the top 7, await the favored Beavers in the Round of 16.

In the 'B' flight, sophomore Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) squares off against California Lutheran University's Grace Maroscher, who joined the Regals as a transfer this offseason, and would face #5 Madison Ross of Redlands were she to advance.  Freshman Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) faces an unkown but potentially excruciating matchup against CLU's Sophia Gawrit, the younger sister of men's First Team All-SCIAC Division I transfer Yahn Gawrit.
