CLAREMONT, Calif. (Sept. 29, 2018) – Freshman Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) of the Caltech women's tennis team has advanced to finals of the Flight B singles tournament at the ITA West Regional Championship.
Yu needed to go through second-seeded Brennan Foreman of California Lutheran University but did so in come-from-behind fashion. Yu won the match 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, then proceeded to handle Foreman's teammate Nicole Alvarez, 6-1, 6-2, to earn a spot in Sunday's final. Yu, an unseeded player, will be facing fourth-seeded Lucy Jiang of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 9 a.m.
In the 'Flight A' doubles draw, senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and sophomore Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) defeated Seeman and Kurdys of Cal Lutheran, 8-4, before falling to second-seeded Chen and Casper of Pomona-Pitzer in the quarterfinals. Liu also competed in the 'Flight A' singles consolation draw and earned a victory by default in the first round before coming up short of the University of Redlands' Mia Fitzgerald in the second round. Freshman Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) won a pair of consolation matches herself, defeating Alisa Ogranovich of Chapman University, 6-1, 6-2, before winning big over Anna Rodriguez of Whittier College, 6-2, 6-2. Additionally, Tifrea came up short in a razor-close match against Ashley Isaac of the University of California Santa Cruz where every set was decided by two games or less (5-7, 7-6(5), 12-10).
