LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (Apr. 22, 2019) – Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) of the 18th-ranked Caltech women's tennis team has been named SCIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for what will be the final time of her four-year career. Moriyama received the SCIAC weekly recognition in freshman and sophomore seasons and is the second member of the Caltech women's tennis team to be named Player of the Week in 2019, with double partner Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) being the first.
The team's only senior player picked up convincing wins at first singles and first doubles at Whittier College, winning solo 6-4, 6-1, after teaming with Liu to take a key point at first doubles, 8-5. Moriyama and Liu became the winningest doubles tandem in program history this year, and Moriyama also holds the record for Caltech's most doubles wins as an individual. Additionally, her 41 career singles wins are good enough for third on the all-time program list behind Rebekah Kito and graduated former teammate Erin Wang.
Moriyama and the Beavers will head to the 119th Ojai Valley Tournament later this week and have drawn the third seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament. The Beavers will travel to No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for the conference semifinals on Friday, May 3.
