VENTURA, Calif. (Apr. 26, 2019) – The Caltech women's tennis team continued into the second half of The 119th Ojai Valley Tournament on Friday with big wins in the Division III singles and doubles tournaments.
Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) advanced to the semifinals with a straight sets win over Nicole Alvarez of California Lutheran University (6-2, 7-5). Next up for Caltech third-seeded senior will be the only unseeded player left in the draw in Mary Kaffen of Trinity University with a place in Sunday morning's finals on the line. Freshman Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy), the tournament's fourth-seeded player fell to Kaffen's sister Zoe, the fifth-seeded player, 6-2, 6-2.
Tifrea, however still has a chance to make some noise in the women's doubles draw, winning her second match with Moriyama, 6-2, 6-1 over Fouts and Trofimova of Chapman University. Caltech's top freshman in the tournament has thus far gelled with its only senior on the team and have now dropped just five combined games between the first two rounds. The duo will look to keep it rolling when they face their toughest test to date in second-seeded Esther Bowers and Mariana Quetzari of Southwestern University on Saturday.
