KALAMAZOO, Mich. (May 8, 2019) – Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) will become the second representative in the history of the Caltech women's tennis team when she competes at the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships. Rebekah Kitto '14 is the first player in the history of program to qualify for nationals.
Moriyama, the west region's 12th-ranked player, qualified for the singles tournament, in large part due to a tremendous run at The 119th Ojai Valley Tournament that saw her become the first Caltech tennis player of either gender to take home Division III singles championship. Despite coming into the tournament seeded third, Caltech's senior captain took down two SCIAC players en route to a championship showdown with the tournament's top-seeded player from Trinity University, who she defeated 6-4, 6-2. The senior also had a successful regular season which saw her lead the Beavers to the third seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament while earning First Team All-SCIAC and Character Award honors.
The individual championships are scheduled for May 24-26, both at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan and hosted by Kalamazoo College. The draw for the individual championship will be done by the women's tennis committee and is set to be released on the afternoon of May 23.
