21st-Ranked Women's Tennis Competes on ITA's Day 2

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 5, 2019) – The 21st-ranked Caltech women's tennis team finished up at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III West Regional Championships with a pair of main draw doubles matches and two consolation singles matches.

Freshman Nina Solovyeva (Houston, Texas / Memorial) showed some tenacity in the second round of Flight A consolation play, defeating Foreman of California Lutheran University in a match that came down to the wire. The rookie came out firing and won the first set, 6-2, dropped the second set 6-1, and eventually pulled through with a 10-8 win in the deciding super tiebreaker. Solovyeva would later come up short to Claremont-Mudd-Scrupps Colleges' Kern in straight sets.

Both of the Beavers' participating doubles teams saw Day 2 action in the main draw after winning opening round matches on Friday. Fifth-seeded sophomores Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) got three games off Juan and Kern of CMS, while Solovyeva teamed with junior Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) and ultimately fell to the Athenas' Bryan-Ajania and Wolfe.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will begin the 2020 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the 33rd-ranked University of Redlands.
