THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2019) – A pair of stand out individual performances lifted the Caltech volleyball team to a competitive match at California Lutheran University on Tuesday evening.
Seniors Lauren Li (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire) and Helena Shield (Mercer Island, Wash. / Mercer Island) each had 12 kills and took an efficient path to reach their respective totals. Li hit .321 in one of her most efficient outings of the season and had the team's only solo block of the night, while Shield's career night yielded a .450 percentage (20 total attempts). Thanks to both players, the Beavers had a chance to upend the Regals in each of the three sets. The visiting team trailed 19-22 in each frame and got to 20 points in the third set following a kill from sophomore Hannah Fan (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) against match point.
Sophomore setter Krystyna Maruszko (Redondo Beach, Calif. / Marymount) had yet another 20-10 night, notching 29 assists and 11 digs while sophomore libero Megan Wang (Henderson, Nev. / Advanced Technologies Academy) led the Beavers with 14 digs. Collectively, the Beavers also had 10 assisted blocks and held their own with an experienced Regals team at the net.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will have three days to regroup before competing against the University of St. Katherine and Mills College for a tri-match this Saturday, Oct. 12. Caltech has a win in hand over St. Katherine from Saturday, Sept. 7 when it defeated the Firebirds, 3-0, in San Marcos.
