PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 18, 2015) – Junior Soumya Kannan (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M Gunn) posted a big all-around line with one goal, three steals, three exclusions drawn and three field blocks as the Caltech women's water polo team hosted Washington & Jefferson College, which received votes in the latest CWPA national poll, on Wednesday night.
The Beavers hung closer than the final 14-2 score would indicate, but fall to 0-10 on the season while the Presidents move above .500 at 7-6.
After the start of the game was delayed due to lightning in the area, the Presidents sprinted out to a 3-0 lead before senior Monica Enlow (Suwanee, Ga. / North Gwinnett) earned a hard-fought goal for the Beavers' first score. The visitors stretched out the margin to 6-1 by the end of the quarter and got the first goal of the second period, when Kannan struck with a rocket from long range. That would be Caltech's final tally, however, as Washington & Jefferson scored six more in the second half to seal the win.
Sophomore Mary Boyajian (Sun Valley, Calif. / Village Christian) made a season-high five steals while junior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) recorded two saves in the second half alone.
Head Coach Pat Beemer and the Beavers will continue their six-game home stand as they open SCIAC play against the University of La Verne (2-8) on Wednesday, Mar. 25 at 4 p.m.
