PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 8, 2016) – Junior Mary Boyajian (Sun Valley, Calif. / Village Christian) and freshman Brittany Percin (Moraga, Calif. / Stanford Online) each scored four goals to lead Caltech women's water polo to its second win of the season, 12-10 over Penn State Behrend, on Tuesday evening.
PSB jumped out to a two-goal lead halfway through the first quarter and held the margin at 3-1 after the first eight minutes. Freshman Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) pulled the Beavers back within one in the first minute of the second quarter, but the Lions regained the two-goal edge on the next possession.
Percin took complete control in the two-meter from that point, scoring four goals herself which, along with a brace by Boyajian tied the game at 5-5 with 3:32 left in the quarter before giving Caltech the 8-6 lead heading into halftime.
A lockdown defensive battle ensued over the first three minutes of the third quarter when Boyajian completed the hat trick to give Caltech a three-goal lead. Senior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) made it four goals with her first tally of the season and the Beavers maintained a 10-7 lead going into the final quarter.
PSB struck on the first possession to pull back within two, but Boyajian scored what would prove to be the game-winner from the perimeter. The Lions kept things interesting with two late goals, but another strike from Wong gave Caltech some crucial breathing room and the Beavers held on for their second win of the season.
Boyajian came up with six steals on defense, leading the team to a total of 20, and led the squad with three assists. Freshman Elise Cutts (Portland, Ore. / Sunset) made eight saves in net.
