CLAREMONT, Calif. (Feb. 28. 2018) – The Caltech women's water polo team made its 2018 debut at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday evening.
Junior Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) found the back of the net for Caltech and sophomore Gabriella Chan (Colleyville, Texas / School for the Talented and Gifted) scored as well in her debut with the team. Chan's goal came in the first quarter, the Beavers' first of the season while Johnston's came in the ensuing quarter. Additionally, Caltech's newly installed goaltending rotation of sophomore Sarah Kreider (River Forest, Ill. / Oak Park and River Forest) and freshman Elaine Lowinger (North Miami, Fl. / Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Biscayne Bay Campus) showed well and rotated between quarters. The duo combined on five saves throughout the contest.
"We kept our composure and managed our emotions very well as a team," Head Coach Jon Bonafede said. "I very much liked our attitude and approach to this first game. We will continue this momentum into this weekend's tournament. We expect to get a few subs as our cross over athletes become eligible which will be the spark we need to get to the next level."
Bonafede and the Beavers are set to compete at the Claremont Convergence Tournament this weekend, beginning Friday, Mar. 2 when they face off with McKendree College at 11 a.m.
