PASADENA (Mar. 23, 2019) – A short-handed Caltech women's water polo team hit double-digit goals against Chapman University on Saturday evening with the Beavers putting their improvements on full display two-thirds into the regular season.
Senior Gemma Takahashi (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) had a breakout game in the field, scoring a career-high four goals while taking an additional six shots. Takahashi was also one of four players to participate in net for the Beavers, with junior Gabriella Chan (Colleyville, Texas / School for the Talented and Gifted), senior Michelle Zhao (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) and freshman Yuying Lin (Scarborough, Ontario / Victoria Park C.I.) also getting looks in goal. Chan, who started the game for Caltech, ended the game with the most saves, stopping four of the team's eight total blocks. Additionally, all active players on the home side played the entire game.
Caltech had at least two goals in every period and senior Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) and freshman Sophie Devoe (La Jolla, Calif. / Bishop's) found multiple ways to contribute. Johnston added a pair of goals to go with three assists and while Devoe posted a 2-and-2 scoring line. Lin and Zhao also found the back of the net for the home team, with Zhao using the back of her head to score her goal following a hard shot from Devoe that ricocheted off the side post.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will be on the road this week, beginning on Wednesday, Mar. 27 when they travel to the University of Redlands at 7 p.m.
