Zabelo Wins Twice as Caltech Men's Tennis Defeats Brandeis

PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Men's Tennis hosted the No. 27 Brandeis University Judges Monday afternoon, and the Beavers edged the visitors 5-4 for their second win of the season.

Highlighting the day was rookie Andrew Zabelo, who partnered with junior Ishaan Kannan to claim Caltech's first match point in Doubles 2, comfortably beating the opposition 8-4. Zabelo then cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win in Singles 3 to help turn the tide after Brandeis led 2-1 following the Doubles session.

Each session came down to a dramatic finish, with Doubles 3 seeing seniors Nathan Zou and Rishi Gundakaram battling all the way to a tiebreak before falling to the Judges' duo 8-7 (2). But it was junior Victor Li who ultimately clinched the match for the Beavers with his three-set win in Singles 5 with scores of 6-3, 5-7 and finally 6-3.

After an 8-5 loss in Doubles 1, juniors Kyle McCandless and Daniel Wen divided and conquered, Wen surging to a near-perfect 6-1, 6-0 win in Singles 4 and McCandless grinding out a 6-4, 6-4 win in the top singles matchup.

"It was just a great effort overall," Head Coach Matt Brisotti said. "Zabelo played a great match, competed really hard and beat a really good player. Wen also played really well against a tough player, and Victor [Li] had a great bounce-back win to clinch it. He played with a lot of heart and passion out there."

Up next for the Beavers is a home match against the Wildcats of Linfield University (Portland, Ore.) on Friday, Feb. 24 at 4:30 p.m. Follow the team on Instagram and Twitter.
