PASADENA, Calif. (Aug. 18, 2015) – The Caltech men's and women's fencing teams have put together their schedule for the 2015-16 season, which will open with the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California Open Tournament at Caltech on Sunday, Oct. 25.
Schedule
Head Coach Carla Corbit's squad will follow its season opener with individual showings at the elite BladeRunner US Fencing Association Regional Open Circuit for only the second time in program history on Nov. 7-8. Rising junior Christina Meyer (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / Hackley School) advanced the farthest of any Caltech fencer, reaching the second round of direct elimination, while graduated senior Katie Fisher, senior Shi En Kim (Malaysia / Anderson JC), junior Matthew Jin (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) and sophomore Ethan Lo (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) all survived pool play to progress to the direct elimination round as well [recaps: men | women].
Caltech heads to UC Riverside two weeks later to face several of its IFCSC rivals – which include UCLA, USC, Arizona State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Pasadena City College – in the final meet of the 2015 calendar year. The Beavers pick things back up Jan. 8-9 at the St. Louis North American Cup, followed by a second round of IFCSC duels at UCSD on Jan. 16.
The prestigious Northwestern Duals arrive after a two-week break, with the Beavers looking to build on last year's impressive showing last season. Against a slew of Division I opponents, the Caltech women's team posted two overall victories and the men's épeé squad recorded three wins.
The Beavers then compete in the IFCSC South vs. South meet at UCSD on Feb. 6, followed by an undetermined competition on Feb. 12 leading up to the IFCSC Championships on Feb. 20 at UCSD.
Individual fencers who amass an NCAA win percentage greater than 20 in the minimum required number of bouts will earn the opportunity to compete at the NCAA West Regional, hosted by The US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Mar. 12. Lo led last year's teams with a fifth-place finish in the épeé, while Fisher came in seventh in the women's foil.
A top-four finish there earns a berth in the NCAA Championships in Waltham, Mass. From Mar. 24-27.
